US stocks — swing: should a beginner start here?

The quietest door, and the only one whose advertised minimum and computed minimum nearly agree.

Facts checked on October 22, 2026

The computed numbers for this door

The base unit: a $50 position in a stock or ETF, with a normal 10% fall before you exit, risks about $5 per position.

Risk term: $5.00 × 100 = $500. Cost term: about $4 a month in trading costs at beginner frequency (4 trades), which needs $200 of capital to stay under 2% a month. Minimum viable capital: $500. Survival floor: $125 — below it, one normal trade risks more than 4% of the account.

Brokers advertise $0 minimums here too — and for once the mechanics mostly agree with them, which is why this door's computed minimum is the lowest on the site.

The trap in this door

The trap is boredom, then leverage envy. Swing positions move slowly; the feed next door shows day traders posting daily results; the beginner adds margin 'just for flexibility' and converts a survivable door into a leveraged one — at the original door's capital. The second trap is the bad year: unleveraged stocks still fall 20–50% in one, and no stop makes a portfolio immune.

The first honest step

Run the checker, then open the demo journal before any account: 50 logged positions at your real size, held by your written rules. Swing trading's whole skill is position sizing and patience, and both are measurable on paper.
