US stocks — day trading: should a beginner start here?

The most rule-confused door in trading — and since June 2026, the confusion is dated.

Facts checked on October 22, 2026

The computed numbers for this door

The base unit: a $200 position in a liquid stock, with a normal intraday stop about 1.5% away, risks about $3 per trade.

Risk term: $3.00 × 100 = $300. Cost term: about $20 a month in trading costs at beginner frequency (40 trades), which needs $1,000 of capital to stay under 2% a month. Minimum viable capital: $1,000. Survival floor: $75 — below it, one normal trade risks more than 4% of the account.

The big app brokers advertise $0 minimums and $0 commissions. Neither number is your cost: the spread and slippage on every round trip are.

The trap in this door

The trap changed shape in June 2026. It used to be the $25,000 wall. Now it is what replaced it: intraday margin. At brokers that have adopted the new standards, a $2,000 account can hold roughly four times its equity during the day — with any intraday deficit to be met promptly, and restrictions for accounts that repeatedly leave deficits unmet. The rule change removed the gate; it did not touch the statistics: the full-market studies still find about 5% of day traders profitable after costs.

The first honest step

Run the checker with your real capital, then check your broker's row on the PDT tracker — the date that matters is your broker's, not FINRA's headline date. Then demo at your real size: the demo account set to $100,000 teaches nothing about trading $1,000.

Before you start, take the whole path

The verdict gives you the arithmetic for your market and your capital. The Start-or-Wait Kit gives you the complete workbook: the demo-record audit (the 50-trade review grid), the staged capital plan up to your market's minimum viable capital, the 90-day learning plan week by week, and the real-cost tracker — the spreadsheet experienced traders build by hand, ready to fill in.
