The markets, judged one by one

Crypto — spot: should a beginner start here?

No leverage, no liquidation — and volatility does the damage leverage does elsewhere.

The computed numbers for this door

The base unit: a $50 position in a major coin, with a normal 15% move before you exit, risks about $7.50 per position — here volatility does the work leverage does elsewhere.

Risk term: $7.50 × 100 = $750. Cost term: about $10 a month in trading costs at beginner frequency (8 trades), which needs $500 of capital to stay under 2% a month. Minimum viable capital: $750. Survival floor: $188 — below it, one normal trade risks more than 4% of the account.

Exchanges advertise starting with $5 or $10. At that size, the standard percentage fee on a round trip is a large share of the position itself.

The trap in this door

The trap is the fee tier. Exchanges advertise low headline fees, but the standard beginner tier charges a percentage on every side of every trade; on a $50 position, the round-trip percentage fee plus spread is a large share of the position. Trade often at small size and the exchange becomes your most reliable counterparty-profit. The second trap is custody-by-default: leaving the whole account on one exchange because moving it felt complicated.
